It’s a New York queer bar institution, but for Jacqui Squatriglia, the movement of Flaming Saddles never gets old.
Owning a queer country western bar was my dream for 20 years.
Then I met Chris, my partner and, as our relationship got more serious, he said: “Do you want to obtain married and have kids? Or do you desire to have fun?” I chose fun, and he said: “Well, what perform you want to do?” I said: “Open up a gay country western bar and see the boys do my dances.” He said: “OK, if we call it Flaming Saddles, I’m in.”
I knew exactly what I wanted it to glance like
I knew I wanted the flock wallpaper, I knew what I wanted the bar top to look like. I even knew what I wanted the boys to wear. Chris location scouted and found the spot on 9th Ave – 52nd/53rd St. Once we got the lease, we were open in 30 days. That was seven and a half years ago.
I was shocked
People kept saying: “Oh great! Another gay bar in the neighborhood!” I couldn’t have faith the pushback we got.
Other people said: “The boys will have to have their shirts off!”
They said: “You’ll have to have a DJ, you can’t do a jukebox. And they certainly can’t wear cowboy boots.” There was a list of people telling

New York City has a new watering hole, FLAMING SADDLES, the new hit ass Gay Western Saloon, where the Bandit Bartenders strut their stuff (behind and on top of the bar) & always aim to please. The Grand Opening of FLAMING SADDLES SALOON was held on Monday October 3, 2011. Celebs and amiable cowpokes saddled up and mixed together in the wild west bordello decor, and enjoyed performances by Flaming Saddles' Bandit Bartenders, while wearing their complimentary special edition Flaming Saddles bandit bandanas with pride.
FLAMING SADDLES SALOON is unlock M-F from 4pm-4am, and Sa-Sun from noon to 4am. Happy Hour specials will be offered weekdays from 4pm to 7pm and weekends from noon to 6pm. "Midnight Cowboy" specials will be offered weeknights from midnight to 2am. Don’t be anxious to bust out some chaps and a cowboy hat at this Hell’s Kitchen Western-themed gay prevent where the staff (known as the “Flaming Saddles Bandits”) do-si-do on the bar top like an all-male version of Coyote Ugly. Though the physical space is not as large as that of other theme bars (you won’t find a mechanical bull here), the tight-jeans and boot-wearing bartenders aid heighten the ambience along with blaring country harmony. Drinks are reasonably priced as is their menu of Tex-Mex-style bar nourishment (which includes chili and hamburgers). Don’t come pursuing a date spot where you can languorously stare into your companion’s eyes all night — there may be too many distractions for that. Instead, come with friends (all ages welcome) and toss back a few cool ones when you’re in the party mood.
