Visiting San Juan’s gay nightlife
My first night out in San Juan certainly wasn’t what I was expecting. I’d only arrived in Puerto Rico a few hours before—just enough time to dip my feet into the Caribbean and hike barefoot on the beach.
Back at my gay-owned guesthouse, I got some recommendations for a night out. First stop was Calle Loiza—a long stretch of road in the Ocean Park neighborhood of San Juan. Multiple people had described the area to me as a “hipster neighborhood,” so I was excited to explore.

Of the Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico, which has a population of about 3.2 million residents (and it hosts almost as many visitors each year), is easily the most welcoming to LGBTQ2S+ travellers. Gay nightlife and gay culture are openly acknowledged, and same-sex couples can be seen walking around holding hands not just in the capital, San Juan, but also in less urban areas. When same-sex marriage was legalized in 2015 in the U.S., that Supreme Court decision applied to Puerto Rico, too.
Despite the Together States’ furnishings—the U.S. dollar as currency, U.S. Postal Service mailboxes, the ease of getting around in English (though Spanish is dominant), Americans not needing a passport to visit—Puerto Rico is most definitely a Latin American destination. Gorgeous Sp
