'This Is It' is Milwaukee’s oldest gay bar

MILWAUKEE — Opened in , “This Is It” has the honor of being the longest continually operating same-sex attracted bar in the Midwest. Founder June Brehm wanted a clean, welcoming, and affordable place where she and her queer friends could feel at home.

55 years later, the vision is continued by owners George Schneider and Trixie Mattel. At one day, Milwaukee had many homosexual bars, far fewer now, but “This Is It” has managed to thrive.

I met with George to learn about the rich history of the bar.

“Historically, we were known as a lgbtq+ bar, but I prefer to call it a queer space. What makes us special is that we’ve hung on to some of the mature elements of style and design, like carpet on the walls and unique stained glass light fixtures. It looks like you’re walking into grandpa's rec room," said George. “To have that connection with the past, we’re a symbol of all the struggles of the past 50 to years, for the rights and freedoms that we have now. It’s a symbol for the queer community and the community at grand. Because out of all of the larger Midwestern cities, we’re the one that has the oldest queer establishment.”

This location, originally the site of two popular move bars Gary's and then Circus Circus, was apparently vacant for a period. Then, in August , a "teaser" ad appeared for "Trash" bar, without an address. The lock "Trash" advertised again in an October issue of Milwaukee Calendar, this age showing the " S. 2nd Street" address. But "Trash" appears to include had a slow begin, and after just a few months, in January , an ad "Trash it up at Club " appeared that essentially signaled a morphing into Club , and a major chapter in Milwaukee's gay bar life began.

Must-Visit LGBTQ+ Bars

Walker&#x;s Pint

Self-proclaimed as Milwaukee&#x;s oldest lesbian bar, Walker&#x;s Pint owes its longevity to great service, a strong community energy and the bar&#x;s famed motto&#x; Be nice or leave. Elizabeth Bet-Z Boenning, who&#x;s owned Walker&#x;s Pint since , ensures it&#x;s a welcoming place for everyone and always stays real to its roots as a supportive community loved one. Count on it for a friendly atmosphere and an always-strong beer list.

Woody&#x;s

Woody&#x;s bills itself as Milwaukee&#x;s only gay sports bar, and in a sports-crazed state like Wisconsin, that&#x;s a serious calling. So expect a crowd during Packers games, and to see the Brewers, Bucks and area college teams on the screens. The Walker&#x;s Point joint also has dartboards, a pool table and other lock games.

Explore Milwaukee&#x;s LGBTQ+ Nightlife

No matter which bar you choose to visit among those listed, you can expect its own trademark of Milwaukee&#x;s famous tavern-centric hospitality. It won&#x;t be long before they realize your name and sip, and it might not be long before you start feeling like a regular.
