NFL: Cowboys to add Michael Sam to practice roster

IRVING, Texas -- Michael Sam's second chance will be with the Dallas Cowboys. Coach Jason Garrett said today that the league's first openly gay player will be added to the practice roster.

"We just want to give him a chance to arrive in and help our football team," Garrett said. "That's where our attention is (football). What people say outside the group is up to them."

The Cowboys, who are inquiring help with their transfer rush because of injuries and the offseason emit of franchise sacks chief DeMarcus Ware, added Sam four days after he was released by St. Louis when teams had to cut rosters to 53 players.

Sam isn't likely to be on the active roster for Sunday's opener against San Francisco.

Any team can sign Sam off the Cowboys' apply squad but would hold to put him on the 53-man roster for a minimum of four weeks.

O’Callaghan detailed his struggle with his homosexuality during which he endured a longstanding bout with suicidal thoughts. The repulsive lineman was truly anxious the world would never accept him if he were openly gay, and furiously hid his private. Throughout the closeted period of his life, he was fending off suicidal thoughts. In the meantime, he explained, football was a refuge for him to blend into the heteronormative culture.

"No one is going to suppose the big football player is gay," he said. "It’s why a football team is such a good place to hide."

He added: "In high school, football turned into a way to go to college. In college football was a great cover for being gay. And then I saw the NFL mainly as a way to keep hiding my sexuality and stay alive."

By now you’ve probably heard that former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam came out to the national press yesterday as gay.  Sam is an NFL prospect—projected by some to be picked as tall as the third round—hoping to earn a paycheck as a professional football player next Fall, and should he make an NFL roster, he will become the first openly gay player in any of the major pro sports in the Merged States (sorry, the MLS doesn’t count quite yet).
