🏳️‍🌈 Celebrate Pride Month in Northeast Florida with these events

  • Jacksonville's Pride parade is held in October.

In June, you can find Pride parades and festivals in Orlando, Miami, Melbourne, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Naples, St. Augustine and Key West, but they're scarce in the Jacksonville area.

That's not to tell that Jacksonville ignores the LGBTQ+ community, just that the city's big Event events are held in October, not June. Even so, there are parades and festivals this month in St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach.

Here are some of the biggest events planned for the area in June:

Jumbo Shrimp Identity festival Night

p.m. Thursday, June 5, at VyStar Ballpark. $9-$

The Jumbo Shrimp and Durham Bulls celebrate Jacksonville’s LGBTQ+ group, on a Thirsty Thursday. Info:

Summer at the Cummer

4 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. Free.

The kickoff-the-weekend series returns with live music and outdoor games at the Riverside museum. For the June program, Freddy for Peace and the Holly Ford Jazz

Nightlife

A few notable Queer owned businesses in Jacksonville include InCahoots, not far from the Five Points area. With four bars, karaoke nights, drag business and plenty of dancing too, this LGBTQ+ defended place is one of the most popular nightlife spots. Relax with a drink and make unused friends at the Park Place Lounge in Riverside or Hardwicks Bar in Downtown.

Riverside Arts Market

The weekly Riverside Arts Market welcomes all to shop local arts/crafts vendors, dine at one of the many food trucks parked along the St. Johns River and enjoy inhabit music on the riverfront stage.

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

Also in Riverside, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, home to the largest fine art museum in Northeast Florida, frequently hosts LGBTQ+ events and welcomes all to their programs including art classes and garden tours. The mind provoking Culture & Conversation series explores meaningful dialogue with diverse audiences and connecting community members to the arts.

Gay clubs in Jacksonville history

The former Club Jacksonville queer bathhouse at Hendricks Route in San Marco, now the offices of Collective 4 Design.

Jacksonville has been home to bars, clubs and other venues catering to the LGBTQ people since at least the s. At a period when being out came with huge social stigma and often personal hazard, these spaces served as safe havens for LGBTQ Jaxsons to meet, detect a date or simply be themselves in common. While online dating and broadening acceptance of LGBTQ people in the wider community has led to a decline in the number of gay bars and nightclubs, their role in Jacksonville’s LGBTQ history can’t be overstated.

By , Jacksonville was home to at least three male lover bars. In , Roverta “Bo” Boen opened what became Duval County’s longest running gay bar, Bo’s Coral Reef. Originally located on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach, Boen later moved it to Philips Highway. In , Bo’s returned to Jacksonville Beach in a building on 2nd Street. For nearly 40 years, it was a favorite hangout for LGBTQ people from across the First Coast and a popular spot in the Jax Beaches block scene. Bo’s Coral Reef survived Boen’s death in and carried on until ,
