Degrassi gay characters

Overview

If you’re Canadian, or Canadian Adjacent, you know Degrassi as the cutting edge teen drama that was actually like high educational facility. In fact, when my friends told me about things like 90210, I was astounded to watch they’d cast 20 year olds as 15 year olds, when Degrassi had been getting things right forever.

The cast has such a high turnover rate, I couldn’t even approach up with a header image to use. Once your character hits 18 and you graduate, you’re out. It’s like the TV version of Menudo.

If you tried to list all the gay kids at Degrassi, you’d wonder what they put in the water there. The first one we met was Alex Nuñez, a awful girl struggling to identify herself. And she did with the ‘straight’ Paige Michalchuck. Paige later identified as bisexual and Alex vanished off into the adult world of organism a physical therapist somewhere with Carla Carlisle. Next we had Fiona Coyne, rich girl at widespread school, who fell for a straight girl before finding quirky (and possibly bi) Imogen Moreno. Imogen was last seen dating website a girl named Jack – Jaqueline Jones – and smoking pot. Love you do.

Adam was notable for dating a p

5. Jackogen!

After Becky’s failed try to be a female homosexual, Becky rushes to discover Jack and ask her to swoop in with all the gay feels. Jack is brooding by a window, having a 5eva alone lesbian moment. I’m sure we’ve all been there before.

Someday my princess will come…

Becky chooses to redeem herself by foregoing queerness in exchange for wing-woman status.

“Did they teach you how to share in Germany?”

Yes, Becky actually goes with that line, which could be a great opener for a threesome in Degrassi: The Next Generation of Soft Porn [It Still Goes There]. But alas, Degrassi chose not to venture into polyamory or multiple partner consensual sex just yet. Becky tells Jack to ask Imogen to dance, thereby making Jackogen canon!

Jack and Imogen are really special, in my opinion, because they are the first gender non-conforming lady couple on Degrassi that mindfully entering into a relationship instead of stumbling into one. From Alex and Paige, to Fiona and that warm biker chick named Charlie, to even Imogen and Fiona, both pairings were characterized by one or both partners’ confused/confusing first attempts to move beyond heterosexuality

Ahead of HBO’s Just-Announced Reboot, We Look Help at 5 Favorite Homosexual ‘Degrassi’ Characters

HBO Max is riding the nostalgia wave, and we’re living for it. The latest series soon to be resurrected is Degrassi. Not only is HBO Max creating a Degrassi reboot with 10 hour-long episodes set to debut in 2023, but it’s also adding all 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation to the streaming platform this Spring. It was a show that was full of queer inclusion, with too many gay Degrassi storylines to count.

Degrassi: The Next Generation aired from 2001 to 2015 with 14 seasons total, the fourth series in the Degrassi franchise. The show was a giant part of many millennials’ lives because it depicted everything — drugs, gun violence, rape and more — in a relatable way. Throughout those 14 seasons, viewers met a ton of queer Degrassi characters, and those explorations of sexuality and gender were some of TV’s most meaningful.

Ahead of the upcoming Degrassi reboot, let’s take a look at the series’ history of LGBTQ representation.

Here are 5 of our favorite lgbtq+ Degrassi characters from The Next Generation:

Degrassi has always been incredible for diversity and visibility — portraying so much acceptance in terms of racial, financial, sexuality, disability, and mental health differences.

And as iconic as the many LGBTQ characters that have graced the halls of the Degrassi Group School are — all of them deserved at least a million hugs for the crap they had to go through!
