Like modern slavery, it was an abusive and degrading institution. Slavery in ancient Rome differed from its contemporary forms in that it was not based on race. But like latest slavery, it was an abusive and degrading institution. Cruelty was commonplace.
A Prevalent Practice
Slavery had a prolonged history in the ancient world and was practiced in Ancient Egypt and Greece, as well as Rome. Most slaves during the Roman Empire were foreigners and, unlike in modern times, Roman slavery was not based on race.
Slaves in Rome might include prisoners of war, sailors captured and sold by pirates, or slaves bought outside Roman region. In hard times, it was not uncommon for desperate Roman citizens to raise money by selling their children into slavery.
Life as a Slave
All slaves and their families were the property of their owners, who could deal or rent them out at any time. Their lives were harsh. Slaves were often whipped, branded or cruelly mistreated. Their owners could also execute them for any reason, and would face no punishment.
Although Romans accepted slavery as the norm, some people – like the poet and philosopher, Seneca – argued that slaves should at least be treated
In honour of LGBTQIA+ history month, Ancient History alumni Ollie Burns takes a closer look at the social, political, and cultural implications of homosexuality in ancient Rome.
Trigger Warning: sexual violence, homophobia, paedophilia, nudity.
The presentation and perception of homosexuality in the Roman world was vastly distinct than how it is today, and gives us an example of how homosexuality has been indelibly linked with communications of power and authority in antiquity. The Latin language has no word for either heterosexual or queer, and instead partners in a sexual relationship would be presented as either active, synonymous with masculinity, or passive and therefore, feminine, regardless of the gender of the individuals involved. Freeborn male Romans had the civil liberty to do as they pleased when it came to sexual activity, and as such, the framework of a Roman bloke engaging in homosexual sex was in no way controversial or taboo to the Romans, as extended as it fell within certain parameters.
Rome was a deeply militarised state, with conquest and dominance deeply ingrained as desirable masculine traits. As a product of this, men were free to engage in
"Slaves of Rome is an adult RPG training simulation game with a robust emphasis on consensual BDSM."
I must have missed something - what part of being a slave in ancient roman times was "consensual"? Someone's really trying to cover their ass! But hey, they lay the LGBTQXYZ approval tag in there, so maybe the social justice pansies that run Patreon+Paypal will overlooks this one, seeing as how it's so "consensual and inclusive"!
Having said that, this looks great, if it pans out. However, given the high fidelity level they're going for (with Unreal engine and all) I doubt it will ever reach a finished declare. Hell, look at how many Ren'Py "creators" abandon/restart their games - and there's FAR less of a workload using that engine than a occupied fledged 3D one. In the few years I've been playing adult games, I'm pretty sure only 3 I played were ever completed from begin to finish - Dreams of Desire, Lab Rats, and Snow Daze. For those 3, there were probably 40 more that were abandoned in some state or another..
