Salford Lads and Girls Club
First of all, lets acquire this straight: The building is called Salford Lads Club, but the philanthropy is called Salford Lads and Girls Club. They provide a wide range of activities for local young people.
Salford Lads Club was established as a purpose built club for boys. The site was officially opened on 24 August as a club for working lads, providing a positive alternative to the teenage street gangs (known as “scuttlers”) in the poorest areas of the city.
The club has continued to provide this facility for more than years and is now considered to be the finest example of a pre First World War club surviving and operating today.
Founded by the Groves brothers of the Groves & Whitnall brewing empire, the current club president and Chair of Trustees, Anthony Groves, is the great grandson of James Grimble Groves!
The club is now open to girls and boys.

A guy has been arrested after a stabbing and attempted car-jackings during meet-ups on a dating app.
Three men were threatened and attacked by a man they met through the app this week, a GMP spokesman said earlier today.
At each meeting, two in Salford and another in Prestwich, the man tried to steal car of the victim but was unsuccessful.
However detectives said the man, who they think was responsible all three attacks, was becoming increasingly violent as they issued a warning to users.
A man was stabbed several times and remains seriously ill in hospital obeying the most recent assault on Bolton Road in Pendlebury, on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, who is in his 20s, was threatened by the offender who was a passenger in his car as they were parked up at around pm, who demanded his keys before attacking him with a knife.

Salford researchers find gay men embrace digital dating as anxiety continues about the Covid pandemic
In the first of three #COVIDSEXLIVES surveys looking at engagement with public health messaging on dating apps during the pandemic among men who have sex with men, including men who identified as gay, bisexual and queer, researchers from four UK universities found 40% were anxious about what comes after so-called ‘Freedom Day,’ 20% were unsure how they felt, whilst 40% were not anxious and were instead ‘looking forward to getting back to normal.’
These men expressed anxieties around getting the virus, leaving their homes, and other people’s behaviour post-lockdown, mirroring anxieties expressed by the UK general public.
Principal Investigator Professor Ben Glow of the University of Salford, said: “Concerns about mental health were also commonly expressed, with men who have sex with men using digital dating website apps such as Grindr, social media such as WhatsApp, and other online technologies such as Zoom, to chat, connect and flirt, helping reduce isolation and loneliness triggered by pandemic restrictions.”
